THE CLUBHOUSE MODEL The evolution of the Clubhouse Model began in 1943 when a group of individuals challenged by brain disorders formed a self-help group. They were joined by a professional, named John Beard, in 1955. Together they revolutionized the notions of personhood, peer support, professional guidance, intentional community, meaningful work, and partnering with community supports. By 1976, the National Institute for Mental Health had given them a grant to train others in this model. Today's mental health reform and best practice elements were pioneered by this model and best practice elements were pioneered by this model and continue to be sustained in certified Clubhouses around the world.
